To offer this level of performance, Sidel is committed, with continuity and attention, to understanding the needs, objectives and challenges of its customers.

The challenge

Sidel has decided to migrate its previous LMS to Totara to achieve strategic objectives in the global formation of the Group. The challenge included three main points:

  • develop highly customized dashboards and catalogs in order to manage all types of training for all personnel (in the classroom and in e-learning), based on professional profiles;
  • create complex recurring training paths for the qualifications of field service technicians, on different types of equipment and profiles;
  • managing the assessment and development of skills for future internal Academies, starting from the Project Managers.

Solution

Sidel has been using e-learning for many years with around a hundred courses developed. Once they migrated their Learning Management System to Totara, Sidel immediately started creating programs for the technical training of their “Field Service Engineering”, for mandatory training and for the insertion of new personnel.

For Sidel it was really important to simplify the user experience in the portal thanks to a “dashboard” that was aesthetically pleasing, flexible and above all immediate, to meet the different needs of multiple user profiles, internal and external. MediaTouch’s decision was to address this need by creating a new dashboard customized by type of user through a customization of the Totara menu, in order to maintain the widest visibility based on the type of audience, for all elements of the dashboard.

The catalog has been completely redesigned in order to display abstracts of the courses, icons, didactic cards and main features of the training, including the courses in development, “coming soon” and just released, “just release”. Each user, based on specific visibility, can now create their own learning plan directly from the catalog, to be evaluated and approved by their manager.

The third requirement was met with a further customized “block” for the creation of “Academy” starting from that for the Project Managers. This block allows Project Managers to self-assess their real capabilities through multiple and detailed criteria. On this basis, managers can review the PM self-assessment and set the gaps from the actual level to the expected level.

To fill the gap for each knowledge area / skill, the system automatically suggests relevant training, linking specific courses in the catalog.

The results

The developments of the Sidel training portal have been gradually implemented, starting in 2017 and further improvements and developments guarantee the full functionality and updating of the system.

The process, in fact, is always in progress because the general users’ dashboard has been designed to continue to host new developments, for specific user profiles such as Lean specialists, subsequent recipients of a specific block to manage their skills development process .

In conclusion we can say that for Sidel a sort of “open process” has been set up to proactively support the growing needs in terms of training, thanks to a “win-win” relationship between customer and service provider.

The Sidel e-learning portal is an integral part of our Blended Learning strategy, where training integrates online courses, workshop shifts and adult courses. The new portal has led to a significant improvement in results in terms of skills learned by our employees, safety and productivity, contributing to long-term costs minimization. Moreover, the setting given to the Sidel portal allows further customized extensions for our clients’ staff in a way that’s both easy and flexible.
